Ford Brings Old-School Luxury into the 21st Century with the Lincoln Continental Concept

lincoln-continental-concept-2015People have been buzzing—including us—about the Lincoln Continental Concept since its unveiling at the New York International Auto Show earlier this month. Since that time, a few precious details have trickled out about the Lincoln Continental sedan set to debut in 2016.

What we do know is that the concept will feature a Lincoln-exclusive 3.0-liter engine modeled after Ford’s EcoBoost twin-turbo V6. In addition, the Continental’s architecture will apparently be modeled after the Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ sedans, except wider and more stylized.

In an interview held during the New York Auto Show, Ford President and CEO Mark Fields summarized the vehicle’s appeal.

“We committed to a full-size luxury sedan, so we’re introducing our Lincoln Continental Concept and this really represents, for us, the future of what we call ‘quiet luxury,’ which is around elegance, it’s around effortless power, and it’s around a serene and relaxed interior.”

Other notable high-end features of the upcoming Lincoln Continental include a wide, reclining backseat, separate climate controls, and even some creature comforts such as a champagne cooler. Borrowing design concepts from the aerospace industry, the Continental concept retains the sleek, sophisticated lines that set Lincoln vehicles apart from the competition.

While using a brand name for the past, Ford hopes that the 2016 Lincoln Continental will become a luxury auto stalwart in the future.

Ford Resurrects a Classic Luxury Brand with the Lincoln Continental Concept

2015-lincoln-continentalOnce upon a time, it was arguably the most popular luxury vehicle in the U.S., driven by movie stars and presidents alike. Now, after a thirteen-year absence, the Lincoln Continental will soon be making its dramatic reappearance on American roads.

This week, Ford announced that a new Continental Concept would debut at the New York International Auto Show beginning April 3rd. The Continental will be available to customers sometime next year.

Whereas most automakers tout the flashy bells and whistles of their latest models, Ford is taking a slightly different approach in emphasizing the “quiet luxury” of its new Continental. To hear Ford President and CEO Mark Fields tell it, the automaker’s vision for the new Lincoln model can be summed up as follows: drive softly and carry a big stick.

“Luxury at its best is about simplifying and quietly exceeding expectations, rather than being the loudest statement on the road,” said Fields. “The Continental Concept showcases the promise of quiet luxury from Lincoln going forward. It also is a strong indication of what’s to come next year as we introduce our new Lincoln Continental full-size luxury sedan.”

Despite its emphasis on quiet performance, the Continental Concept offers plenty of visual delights for auto aesthetes. For instance, the full-size sedan features a sleek silhouette and a centered, rectangular chrome grille that prominently displays the iconic Lincoln logo. As a call back to its illustrious past, the Continental will be painted in its signature color of Rhapsody Blue.

In terms of creature comforts, the new Lincoln Continental will sport E-Latch door handles that tuck in the vehicle’s beltline, as well as open and close quietly with a push of a button located under the door handle wings. The vehicle’s interiors will consist of plush Venetian leather seating, satin headliner and shearling wool carpet.

Ford is betting that the revival of the Lincoln Continental will help raise Lincoln’s lagging sales in the luxury car segment and return the brand to its former glory.

The midsize luxury sedan was the vehicle of choice for the jet set for decades, with sales peaking at over 62,000 in 1990. But the Continental languished soon thereafter thanks to a number of factors, including atrophying design quality and increased competition from foreign luxury models. The last Lincoln Continental was manufactured in 2002.

If you’re looking for a new Lincoln or other great pre-owned vehicle in the Houston, TX area, then your best bet is West Point Lincoln! Located on 11666 Katy Freeway, our customer-oriented dealership can help you locate the vehicle you want. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Ford’s Intelligent Speed Limiter Curbs Need for Speed

The Intelligent Speed Limiter in action. For many Houston drivers, posted speed limits are less of a rule and more of a suggestion. Unfortunately, this need for speed often gets folks in trouble if they’re pulled over for speeding or, worse still, get into avoidable accidents.

Speeding is also a huge issue in the U.K., with over 15,000 drivers receiving speeding fines in 2013 alone. This may help to explain why U.K. Ford is introducing the Intelligent Speed Limiter, which, as its name implies, prevents drivers from exceeding the speed limit.

The Intelligent Speed Limiter is composed of two pre-existing technologies: the Adjustable Speed Limiter allows drivers to manually set a maximum cruising speed, while the Traffic Sign Recognition scans for road signs and provides the system with relevant speed and road data.

When the Intelligent Speed Limiter system is activated, the vehicle cruises at a speed no greater than 5 mph over the posted speed limit. A dashboard-mounted camera scans for traffic signs and increases or decreases the vehicle’s speed accordingly. If no road signs are available, the system receives available data from a separate onboard satellite navigation system, such as a GPS.

On occasions when the vehicle exceeds the set speed limit, a warning alarm is triggered and the vehicle stops receiving fuel until it has slowed. According to Ford U.K., “the system smoothly controls speed using engine torque,” which, all things considered, is a better method of decelerating than slamming on the breaks.

According to Stefan Kappes, active safety supervisor for Ford of Europe, the Intelligent Speed Limiter provides an invaluable service for drivers.

“Drivers are not always conscious of speeding and sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement,” said Kappes. “Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit.”

U.K. Ford is introducing the Intelligent Speed Limiter for the Ford S-MAX, a multi-purpose vehicle for the European market. The S-MAX is expected to make its U.K. debut this summer, with no word yet as to when the Intelligent Speed Limiter will make an appearance stateside. In the meantime, watch the video below and consider the possibilities…

Texas Cop Finds Laughs Parodying McConaughey’s Lincoln MKC Ad

Without question, the Lincoln MKC commercial featuring Matthew McConaughey was one of the most buzzworthy advertising campaigns of 2014. Not only did it lend celebrity cache to Lincoln’s compact premium crossover, but comedians ranging from Ellen DeGeneres to Jim Carrey had a field day satirizing McConaughey’s portentous narration and Rust Cohle-like reflections on life.

With such great comedic options to choose from, would you believe that the funniest Lincoln MKC parody yet would come from a Texas police officer? If you don’t believe us, just watch the video below and judge for yourself:

Entitled “Live In Your Moment,” the video features Sergeant Larry Wise of the Cedar Hill Police Department riding around in a Ford Police Interceptor. Imitating McConaughey’s spacey, self-serious delivery, Wise intones that “you don’t get into police work cause it makes sense…you do it ’cause you thought it looked really cool on T.V. or ’cause med school was just outta the question.”

Wise hopes that one of the effects of the video is that it makes the police seem more human to the people they serve.

“We laugh at the same things, we enjoy the same things, and no we’re not just robots programmed to ticket and arrest,” said Wise.

CBS DFQ reported that the parody video was originally conceived as part of a police awards banquet before it made it onto the social media pages for the CHPD. Since Wise’s video was shared on social media late last month, it has received over 500,000 likes on YouTube and over 6,600 likes on Facebook.

After the debut of McConaughey Lincoln MKC ad late last year, sales of the MKC have increased 16 percent. Lincoln hopes that the MKC and redesigned MKX, which was recently introduced at the Detroit Auto Show, will drive the automaker toward higher profits in 2015 and beyond.

And if Lincoln MKC sales do improve, Lincoln might just have a funny cop in Cedar Hill, TX to thank as well.

Lincoln Launches Music Selfie Experiment to Lure Social Media Users

Selfies are a common form of self-expression these days, and pretty much everyone enjoys listening to music. So you can imagine that the folks at the Lincoln Motor Company thought, “hey, why not take these two things people love and mash them together?”

The result of said fusion is the Music Selfie Experiment, a software-centric, social media marketing campaign that, to quote Lincoln’s tag line, “turn[s] your selfie into a song as unique as you are.”

The Experiment was first launched at the 2015 ESSENCE Black Women in Music event held earlier this month. In essence—pardon the pun—here’s how it works: the user uploads his or her digital self-portrait via the Music Selfie website or by tweeting it to @LincolnMotorCo. The software then scans the photo’s facial measurements, which forms the basis for an original musical track that the user can hear instantaneously.

As Lincoln states in a press release promoting the project, the goal is connect the auto company with social media-savvy customers, particularly younger ones. Lincoln hopes that users will be motivated to share their facially generated audio tracks with their friends and followers on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites.

While we were a bit skeptical at first, we have to admit that the Music Selfie Experiment is pretty cool once you try it out. For more information about how it works, read the Lincoln Media Center press release, check out the Music Selfie Experiment website or watch the video here.

Lincoln and Google Create a Smart App to Make Driving Simpler

If you a Lincoln owner who habitually loses the keys to your vehicle, or who can’t keep track of where you parked, we have a story that will interest you.

The Lincoln Motor Company, in association with Google, announced that it has built an Android mobile app that will allow owners to remotely start, lock, unlock and locate their vehicles from any location. The free MyLincoln Mobile app is the first of its kind to seamlessly integrate with Google Now cards, thereby allowing Android users the ability to access preferred searches, weather reports, traffic routes and other useful information.

Matt VanDyke, Director for Global Lincoln Marketing, says that the convenience of the MyLincoln Mobile app will be of great benefit to users.

“Delivering unique experiences for the luxury client throughout ownership is fundamental to Lincoln,” said VanDyke. “By innovating with leading tech companies, we have an opportunity to personalize the ongoing interaction between the customer and the vehicle.”

One of the more useful applications of the MyLincoln Mobile app is that it enables Lincoln owners to schedule remote starts for the vehicle based on a specific, prescheduled date and time in the Google Now card. The app can also automate the Lincoln’s heating or air conditioning units based on in-vehicle temperature settings.

For now, MyLincoln Mobile connects with a few select Lincoln models, namely the 2015 Lincoln MKC and MKZ, through a modem embedded in those vehicles. The app will also connect with the 2016 Lincoln MKX when that vehicle is launched in Fall 2015.

While you’re waiting for the 2016 MKX to arrive, we invite you to check out the great new and pre-owned Lincoln cars we currently have available at West Point Lincoln. Our dealership on 11666 Katy Freeway is ready and able to serve your Lincoln needs today!
